Asbestos Safety Officer

Asbestos safety officers check buildings and worksites to find materials containing asbestos and make sure they are handled safely. They protect workers and the public from a serious health hazard.

The Role & Expectations

As an asbestos safety officer, you inspect buildings and construction sites to find materials that contain asbestos - an invisible mineral that is very dangerous if breathed in. Once you find asbestos, you create a plan showing how it should be handled and removed safely. You write detailed reports and give advice to contractors and workers on how to protect themselves.

Your work matters because asbestos can cause serious lung disease and cancer if people are exposed to it over time. Most days you will visit buildings with builders, surveyors or facility managers, spot the risk, plan the safe removal, and check that the work is done properly. You need to know the UK regulations inside out and be able to explain them clearly to people who may not understand the danger.

Daily Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough inspections of buildings and sites to identify asbestos-containing materials.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive asbestos management plans tailored to specific projects.
  • Provide expert advice and training to staff and contractors on safe handling and disposal of asbestos.
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of asbestos control measures in place.
  • Prepare detailed reports and documentation for regulatory compliance and audits.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and stakeholders to ensure adherence to legal requirements.
  • Respond to asbestos-related emergencies and incidents, coordinating necessary actions.
